What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is a potentially serious gum infection that damages the structures responsible for supporting your teeth. It is quite often a silent condition which is painless and can go undetected. If left untreated, it can result in loose teeth or complete tooth loss.
The different types of gum disease.
Gingivitis
The milder form of gum disease is known as gingivitis. The good news is, with improved oral hygiene and occasionally some help from your dentist or hygienist, gingivitis can be reversed. It is typically characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily.
Periodontitis is the more severe form of gum disease, this is irreversible. Periodontitis involves the loss of supporting bone, as a result, in addition to the symptoms of gingivitis, it can also cause receding gums, gaps in between teeth, bad breath and wobbly teeth.
Is there a cure?
Although gum disease cannot be cured, it can be stabilized. Non-surgical therapy can successfully stabilise up to 80% of cases, with some patients requiring more advanced treatment.
