There are two types of crown lengthening; aesthetic and functional.
Aesthetic Crown Lengthening
The purpose of aesthetic crown lengthening is to improve the appearance of what’s often called a ‘gummy smile’, which can cause teeth to appear short. Gummy smiles are usually a result of the gums failing to settle at the stem of each tooth. This kind of crown lengthening is also often referred to as a “gum lift”.
Fortunately, this can be addressed by surgically recontouring the gum tissue and in some cases the underlying bone, which reduces the excess gum tissue to expose the entire tooth. This results in a more pleasing tooth-to-gum ratio.
Functional Crown Lengthening
Functional crown lengthening may be required when your tooth has fractured below the gum line, or there is deep decay which is difficult for your dentist to gain access to. The aim of this procedure is to expose enough healthy teeth so that a crown or a filling can then be placed with ease. This is completed surgically by recontouring gum tissue and in many cases, the bone around a tooth.
