Most patients diagnosed with periodontal disease (otherwise known as gum disease) will initially be treated with non-surgical periodontal therapy.
This treatment aims to reduce the depth of the gum pockets that house your teeth and will work best when patients have optimal oral hygiene. Dr Patel can offer educational advice on how to get the most out of your at-home oral hygiene routine.
Using special instruments, Dr Patel can meticulously remove plaque and calculus (calcified plaque) that has accumulated under the gum line, and that can’t be removed through a normal scale and polish alone. This treatment is available under local anaesthetic; therefore, you can expect to be comfortable throughout the procedure.
How will the treatment help?
The procedure can stimulate your gums to re-attach and tighten against your teeth so they are in a better position to support them. Success will be measured by a reduction in the depth of the gum pockets and a reduction in the number of sites with inflamed and bleeding gums. Ultimately, this should improve the longer-term health of your teeth and gums. Almost 80% of patients with active gum disease can be stabilised with non-surgical therapy and can then progress onto a supportive phase maintenance programme.
